Clock
The clock lamp was patented by the watchmaker Carcel and Carreau in 1800. The clock mechanism located on the bottom of the lamp was designed to drive the pump located in the oil tank, which pumped oil into the burner. The system was modified and improved (by Gagneau in 1819, Rimber in 1826, Carreau in 1834 and Cadot in 1838) but general principle of operation has not changed.
